| Book and snuggles with Dad after doctor. He was not a happy boy at all! |
I was a very proud mom at the doctor. Calin was showing off all his talking like crazy to the doctor! He even started saying doctor "docca" at the office when I told him that's who we were seeing and said it to Dr. Gessel when she came in. She was quite impressed with how much he could say.
Shots this time at the doctor were not fun! I think it was the MMR. He was whining a little in the early afternoon after the doctor if we bumped his leg, but then around 5 while I was at the store, he totally fell apart with Robby. He would not stand or walk, but only let Robby hold him standing up. Finally we got him to sit in the rocking chair while Robby read some stories. I had been fixing dinner and we convinced him to come sit with us. He had to sit on our lap and finally started eating after a while of sitting there. His poor leg must have been really hurting. Robby left to go to a court of honor and I took Calin on a walk to distract him. We also skyped with my mom, but the video wasn't working. She could hear him cry, then try to talk and respond, then cry, then try to play, it was so sad! He still would not walk or stand. Finally I decided to brave giving him Tylenol on my own (we have not had good experiences giving it too him in the past-he gags and threw up once). He did much better (still crying pretty hard and a little gag) and we got it all in! I could see a huge difference in about 10 minutes. He started playing and tried walking around (he was still limping pretty good on it). I was worried it would be a long night, but he slept great. Woke up a few times, but went right back to sleep each time. What a champ!! He is still a little sore today and limping a little, but seems to be much better! Yea for almost being done with all these shots!!
I am surprised every day at the things Calin does and says. I may be partial, but I think he is exceptionally smart!! That being said, I didn't want anyone to think that I wrote a lot of this down to brag. Mostly it has just been a place for me to keep track of the things he has been saying/doing lately. I'm sure I still missed some, but I have had a draft going for a couple weeks and adding to it as I could. I really wanted to make a list for my own sake to see what all he knew.
-Over the past few months, since Calin turned one, he has taken off with talking. He slowly started saying more and more words and over the past week or two it seems like he pretty much tries to repeat everything we say. A lot of his words sound the same, but I can usually figure out what he is saying. He has a few things that he says fairly often that Robby and I can't figure out. Otherwise, most of the talking he does is repeating what we say or saying words he knows.
Words:
mom "mommommom" dad "daddaddad" bird "ba" bee (also means bug and bird sometimes) hi bye no peanut butter "pe-up boo" more "mo" bug "bu" back me bike duck ball "bow" Becca "beckaaa" (he always says it loud and repeats at least 3 times) broke "boke" book juggle "duga" thumb "num" jump "dum or dup" balloon "boon or bogoon or baboon"
hat "ha" peek-a-boo "pee booo" help "ap" up down "dow" neck please "pea" cheese "jeez" thank you "da doo" poke "boke" baby "baaby" ouch "out" ow owie broom "boom" mummy spoon "poon" toe "do" cool car "co ca"
cookie "cku-ckie" out hop outside "iii" surprise "biii" boo
skateboard "baebo Hollie "how-ie" banana "nana" apple "apo" money "monu" bucket "bucku" hot "ha" keys "geez"
-His animals sounds he says when we ask him what the animals says (most of the time-he is not a great performer), and he also uses the sound to identify the animal when he sees it in a picture or for real.
Animal Sounds:
lion (throaty gurgly growl) tiger (similar to lion) dog (woo woo)
cat (meow) cow (mooo) sheep (maaa or baaa) goat (maaa or baaa) horse (lip vibrating noise but he does it with his tongue and cheek) monkey (oo oo ah ah ah) bird (ooo ooo-like the morning doves we have outside our house) owl (who) elephant (arm up and blows air our lips) sea lion (ow ow ow) grasshopper (he says hop) fish (pop noise with lips) rabbit (wiggles his nose) butterfly (flaps his arms) turkey (gobba gobba-he does this for turkey vultures too) donkey "he ha" shark (na na-like the jaws theme song and claps his hands) zebra (same noise donkey) chicken "ba ba baaaaa" bear (growl/moan) gorilla (monkey sound with thumping on chest-he does not do this very well)
bee (buzzing type sound-only done this a few times)
Sound Effects:
boom (makes for loud noises such as fireworks) car noises
ghost (ooooo) coo coo (grandma's clock) airplanes
ooooohhh (says to stuffed animals when snuggling animals or us)
tarzan (ahhh ahhh ahhh-while pulling on a rope we have hanging from our tree)
kissing noise "mmmmaa" (to give kisses and if he sees kisses in a picture or something)
tada (he does this when he feels like he accomplishes something-stacks his cups on top of each other)
Peeyou (he does this after we say it about his stinky diaper. One time we set the diaper aside, instead of taking it out to the garbage, and got distracted with a toy or book or something. Then Calin went over by diaper, picked it up, and with his other hand waved in front of his face saying peeyou! Robby and I both were cracking up!)
-When Calin grabs things around the house we often say "that's moms" or "that's dads". He will often later point or pick up that thing again and say "mom" or "dad". He remembers things really well! When Robby is at work, he will also point to the chair that Robby sits at when we eat and say "dad dad!" I have to remind him LOTS of times throughout the day that Dad is at work. He really misses dad when he is gone!!
-Calin has been LOVING dancing to music a lot the last few weeks. My uncle David got him this book and CD with silly songs for his birthday. We started listening to it every now and again about a month ago and now he asks for it and has some favorite songs. He likes it when we hold him and he lays on our shoulder while we dance.
He also dances by himself too. It is this cute little feet stomping/tapping dance that we call his "happy feet". He often dances anytime he hears music. He was even dancing a little during the hymn at church! :/ guess we better start working on what dancing music is and isn't!
-He is still eating just about anything and everything we give him. I still get a little nervous with some foods and whether or not he will be able to chew them. I also still like to stay pretty involved when he eats. If I cut up food and put it in front of him he shoves a TON in his mouth and then has a hard time chewing and swallowing and often seems like he will choke. So I try to just always be right there to keep him from eating too much. He is slowly learning to use silverware. Mostly we give him a little plastic spork and he does pretty well with that.
-He still only has 7 teeth. He has his other front bottom tooth on the way in now, so soon it will be 8!
-Calin goes to bed around 8:30-9:00 and most nights sleeps until 6 or 7. Occasionally I can get him to go back to sleep til 8, but that is rare. He does still occasionally wake up at night but the majority of the time he goes right back to sleep. Because he wakes up so early I am still doing two naps. The morning nap is only about 30-45 minutes. His afternoon nap is anywhere from an hour to 2 hours. He is doing much better at going to sleep on his own. I started just laying by his crib but have slowly moved out towards the hallway. As long as he can still somewhat see me, he will go to sleep in his crib on his own. Although this may be a much longer and time consuming approach for me, it is working way better with Calin than crying it out did. Hopefully it keeps working. Today, for both naps it only took 5-10 minutes and then he was asleep!! I started giving Calin a pillow during naps because he loves laying on them. He did so much better with a pillow. I just got the ok from our doctor for him to use a small flat pillow at night, so hopefully that will help him even more! He loves that pillow and when he woke up in the middle of the night he would point to the pillow wanting it. So he will be glad to have it now!
-He loves to race cars and is really good at putting them on the track himself. He even knows when they are facing the wrong way of not on straight. He also likes to roll balls down the track too. He even sometimes tries to put his animals down the track.
-He loves to play with balls. We have a whole basket full of all different sized balls and he loves to throw them around and shoot them in our little basketball hoop. He also loves to "duga" (juggle) and asks us to do it all the time too.
-Likes to give hugs to other kids. Although this is really cute, it is becoming a problem. He will hug them but then squeeze and not let go. So I am trying to encourage high fives only with everyone but mom and dad. He is a very loving boy and I don't want to discourage that, but it is a little weird when he does it to other random kids.
-Loves to look at books. He will sometimes lay down and listen to us read the whole book, but mostly he like to hold the book and just look through the pages at the pictures. He loves it when he finds pictures of balls in books.
-Nods his head yes. He just started doing that this past couple weeks. He does not always do it at the right time, but most of the time it is. Robby or I will say something like "should we go in your room and get a book?" and he will nod his head.
-He is very helpful. He is usually good to help clean up toys or get something for me, or take something to Robby, etc. He loves to have "little missions" to help us, like taking something to the garbage can. He always looks so proud when he is doing it.
-Church is still long and hard, but each week I just try to have a few new extra tricks up my sleeve to keep him busy.
-He is good at prayers at meal times and will usually keep his arms folded through most of the prayer.
-Robby loves Halloween and has been already reading lots of Halloween books with Calin so that he can prep him for the Halloween characters and sounds.
| Love this funny scrunchy face he makes all the time! |
